Book review Expanding our now - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Book audit Expanding our now - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This book is Harrison Owens second book about Open Space, and it contains accounts of how he showed up at the idea of Open Space, and of how it has helped and changed different associations. Likewise, the book addresses time, or rather on our impression of it. All we truly have is presently. The past is finished, the future hasnt yet started. In any case, to what extent is that now? Seven days? A year? A moment? Harrison Owen contends, that we are allowed to pick our view of that now, and that the more extended our now turns into, the more joyful we are. A long currently gives us progression in our lives, instead of fluttering from one short, furious second to the following. He accepts (and all my experience focuses to something very similar) that Open Space gatherings can grow our now. As he puts it: At the least, open Space is about better, increasingly proficient gatherings. However, theres more to it. Open Space gatherings advance genuineness, innovativeness, transparency, profitability, self-association, rise, authority, proprietorship and a subtle quality we may call Spirit. In his most recent book on Open Space, The Power of Spirit, Harrison Owen expounds on Spirit, yet he is hesitant to characterize precisely what it is. We will most likely be unable to characterize it unambiguously, yet we as a whole know when its present, and we as a whole endure when its not. Growing Our Now contains many, numerous bits of knowledge identified with the act of Open Space. One of my preferred contemplations is about what might occur in an association that pre-owned Open Space constantly. Where Open Space as a training had vanished, in light of the fact that it was an instilled piece of the way of life and structure. I feel that could be a profoundly viable, dynamic and fun work environment. Another idea is the thing that it resembles to carry on with your life as an Open Space. It appears this is practically what Harrison Owen is doing. The four standards and one law of Open Space absolutely mean great living guidelines as I would see it. Envision living by the accompanying standards: * Whoevers present are the ideal individuals * Whatever happens is the main thing that could have occurred * Whenever it begins is the opportune time * When its over its over Also, obviously the one law (The law of two feet): If you end up in a circumstance where youre neither learning nor contributing, you reserve the privilege to utilize your two feet and leave. In any event, living by these guidelines will keep you concentrated on what's going on, as opposed to on what you expectation will occur. I suggest this book exceptionally, however in the event that youre new to Open Space, I suggest that you start with Open Space: A clients guide and afterward read The Power of Spirit, before handling this one. A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. A Lifelong Introvert Shares How to Make Networking Events Enjoyable
A Lifelong Introvert Shares How to Make Networking Events Enjoyable I go to systems administration occasions for my activity alone. All the self observers perusing this just heaved with sickening apprehension, since considering strolling into a room loaded with outsiders makes our faces flush, our hearts beat quicker and our hands shake.Youd think we were being pursued by Pennywise. Can you go to systems administration occasions solo? Here are five things I do to cause myself to feel (somewhat) more agreeable as a self observer at systems administration occasions.? ?1. I search for mavericks. ?In the event that I dont see a recognizable face when I stroll into the occasion, I target somebody who is remaining solitary. On the off chance that there are no antisocial people, I go to the reward table and listen in while getting a refreshment. I tune in for a discussion I can add to, at that point ask the gathering an inquiry about their subject. I keep up the discussion while inclining toward a table with them. Once there, I inquire as to whether they min d on the off chance that I sit with them. Nobody has said no yet. ? ?2. I practice my lift pitch.?Im continually refining my lift pitch to feel less anxious about giving it. In the wake of conveying it to another crowd of individual participants, I delay for questions. What they ask uncovers where my discourse is feeble and permits me to change it for the following systems administration occasion. This likewise offers me a chance to approach them for theirs and check whether I can consolidate any of their style into mine.?3. I discover shared opinion quickly.?One organizing occasion I went to was hung on a mercilessly cool day. An approaching polar vortex was featuring, so discussing the climate was an easy decision. During the occasion, one of my table mates made transportation plans to move class for her little girl, so getting some information about her youngsters was self-evident. Another had a Louis Vuitton tote, so praising her was simple. At the point when they discussed the dubious chicken serving of mixed greens at lunch, I approached another participant for her chicken plate of mixed greens formula. During the occasion, my significant other messaged me a clever image including a pooch. I demonstrated it to them and got some information about their hide babies.? ?Finding simple discussion like this makes any occasion fly back and makes it simpler to make important connections.4. I associate with vendors.?If the occasion highlights seller involved corners loaded with loot to draw participants into discussion, I take the trap and get some information about their organizations. I give them both my business card and lift pitch, finishing with: Im not certain privilege all things being equal how our organizations can help one another, yet Id like to do some exploration and get back with you. May I have your business card? This finishes the association, and this self observer can proceed onward liking increasing a contact to catch up with. ??5. I put myself in the host mindset.?If this occasion has a mid-day break, I welcome different participants to eat with me. This is unnerving stuff, yet on the off chance that I approach it with a host attitude; I think that its simpler to do. For instance, Ill state: Did you need a beverage with your boxed lunch? Im on my approach to get one. What would i be able to get for you? OK mind discovering us a spot to sit while I snatch those? Much appreciated! On the off chance that this occasion has presentation stalls, I start up discussions with different members around me hanging tight in line for our chance at the mainstream ones. Perhaps Ill state: These folks must be extremely incredible. What organization accomplish you work for?? ?Systems administration occasions regularly feel like Kindergarten break. I trust that somebody will look, at that point say, Hi! Im Mardi, whats your name? what's more, the game starts. Its less alarming when I advise myself that all I need to do is make an underlyin g association and that is the reason every other person is there, as well.- - Mardi has been contrasted with the C.U.L.A. The time I learned to say No at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
The time I figured out how to state No busy working - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog It was just my subsequent activity out of college, functioning as a product designer for a little counseling organization in Copenhagen. I was 26 years of age, wearing formal attire that despite everything felt like a halloween outfit to me, having gatherings with the clients VP of account, attempting to discover precisely what the IT framework we were creating for their new production line ought to be prepared to do. The client was in France, and I normally flew down there from Copenhagen for work and gatherings, arriving in Basel, an air terminal arranged so you can exit into Germany, France or Switzerland, contingent upon which leave you pick. As one of my associates discovered to his cost when he inadvertently left on the Swiss side instead of the French and wound up paying Swiss taxi rates for the outing to the clients plant as opposed to French. Presently heres the issue: At each and every gathering, the client changes the specs for the framework. First they need this, at that point they need that. First they like it in as such, at that point in that way. In the interim, Im unobtrusively going insane. Obviously I never show it, God help us, I play the quintessential expert, equipped for managing everything. What's more, obviously the client is in every case right? So I coolly disclose to them this is unique in relation to what you said at our last gathering and executing the change will be expensive. They simply state sure, however that is the thing that we need. And afterward, at long last, I lose it at a gathering. They present change number 2883 (by my free reconing), indeed backpedaling on what theyve let me know already, and I snap. I really pound the table with my clench hand, snap my envelope shut and state through grasped teeth No. This cannot go on. This framework will never get off the ground on the off chance that you continue altering your perspective at each gathering. We have to settle on choices and stick to them. At that point we enjoy a reprieve. Throughout the break Im remaining solitary drinking some espresso, thinking great, that is the finish of this undertaking for me. I feel truly embarassed for having lost my cool in that manner. So what occurs next is absolutely unforeseen for me: They begin rewarding me much better. All the time Id attempted to play the cool proficient that didnt truly fly with them. Yet, when I got frantic, and demonstrated it, I gave them a portion of the genuine me. I gave them that I was human, and that there were things I wouldnt set up with. Starting there on, they regarded me more and they confided in me totally. I turned into the person they went to first and work on the framework turned out to be substantially more smooth. Go figure! I took in two things from this episode: 1: Dont be reluctant to disapprove of a client Customers trust you more in the event that you state no when the appropriate response is no. In the IT organization I helped to establish later, we once asked a client what they loved about working with us. Their answer That you state no! Our different providers express yes to each demand we have, at that point dont convey in light of the fact that its excessively troublesome. You all state no on the off chance that you cannot do it or if its a poorly conceived notion. 2: Show feelings at work Sometimes its a good thought to show what youre truly feeling. Theres this fiction in the working environment that we come to function as sane individuals and leave feelings at home. That just aint so we get as cheerful, frantic, miserable, excited, disillusioned and energized at fill in as we do outside of it. Never demonstrating that isnt bravo. One of the keys to satisfaction at work is a capacity to state Yes! as I expounded on in a past post. At the point when another thought tags along, when someone requests your assistance or when an associate recommends another methodology, saying Yes is the thing that moves things along. In the event that all thoughts and recommendations are met with a No (or a Yes, yet) change turns out to be exceptionally troublesome. In any case, its similarly as essential to state no when no is the appropriate response. On the off chance that you cannot state No busy working, at that point your Yes is aimless. In the event that you work in an organization where Yes has by one way or another become the main satisfactory answer, implying that consistence is constrained on representatives, at that point no one is truly saying yes. Theyre not given a decision. Demotivation, negativity and secretive harm are certain consequences of this. In the event that you loved this post Im almost certain youll likewise appreciate these: Get fortunate at work Top 5 business sayings that need to go Step by step instructions to determine clashes at work A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most mainstream articles. HR lessons learned behind closed doors
HR lessons learned behind closed doors HR Lessons Learned as the fly on the wall Lesson #1: Dont oogle the talent. In the least, dont get caught. HR Lessons Learned as the fly on the wall I feel like I have had a lot of HR lessons learned and the majority of what I learned was learned behind closed doors. These are the lessonsyour manager is probably not going to take the time to share with you. There is nuance with every group, but there is a lot of commonality between people. These learnings come from observations of both and being thepreverbalfly on the wall. Corporate Lessons: If you want credibility inside and outside of your department, learn the business of your company first, then learn the business of your department. It surprises me how many people know their position but not the company goals. If you want to be promoted to the next level, prove you can succeed within the job at that level. Prove you have the technical chops and the maturity to work with peers at that level. Success at your current level is not enough. No manager is going to say, âyou have been doing well as an individual contributor, we are going to take a chance and make you a managerâ. They will say âeven though you are an individual contributor, everyone treats you like they want you to be their manager. We want to promote you to a manager.â Look like a duck, walk like a duck, quack like a duck. There is ALWAYS a way. It might take some digging, it might take more hours, but there is ALWAYS a way. If we can put a man on the moon, than any impossible task your manager has assigned you can be done. The word âcanâtâ should not be in your vocabulary. The answer is not ânoâ. The answer is âYes if we can do Xâ. The answer is not âWe canâtâ. The answer is âWe can if . . .â If you donât like your current manager, trying to escape that manager by quitting or asking for a transfer is just putting off the inevitable. HR will rarely approve a transfer under these conditions. If you are not able to figure out how to make it work with your current manager, you wonât be able to make it work with your future manager. Donât quit a job because of the manager. Figure out how to make it work. Employees donât quit a company. Employees quit a manager. HR Lessons learned HR should always keep a box of tissues handy. I have never met someone who joined a company with the attitude that they were there to take advantage of or try to screw the company. Everyone accepts a job excited and wanting to make a difference. If they lost interest, it was over time. It wasnât any individuals fault. More often than not, it was a matter of communication. The company needs to communicate and the employee needs to get clarification on that communication. If you donât understand something, ASK! Working in HR, I do NOT work for the employees. I work for the company. Make no mistake, I am here to protect the company first and the employees second. By taking care of the company, I am taking care of the employees. Spock said it best. âThe needs of the few and the many, outweigh the needs of the one.â When I can help coach individual employees to perform at a higherlevel, the department will become stronger. When I can make a difference with a department and help that department become stronger, the company becomes stronger. HR has a reputation for âseagull managementâ. Seagulls shit on you and then fly away. HRâs biggest sin is NOT that their explanation is âno, it canât be doneâ. HRâs biggest sin is explaining it canât be done with the assumption and attitude that everyone should understand why. The âWHYâ is not obvious to everyone. My goal is to deliver a business decision and explain it 5 different times, 5 different ways so we increase our chances of widespread understanding of the âWHYâ. I donât expect everyone to like the decisions personally, but my goal is to have EVERYONE respect the decision from a business point of view, so they can do their job. There is a difference. They may not like the decision personally but hopefully most can respect itâs business application. Break the stereotype. I am not going to please everyone, EVER. I can move the needle incrementally. I can make a difference over time, but I do not know of any time ever in my career when EVERYONE was fat and happy. There has always been one person that wanted more, and that is OK. My ability to maintain confidentiality is all that I have. Culture can make a difference in a company. Culture will keep employees longer when a company is on tough times. Any company can have a great culture when the times are good and the deals are coming. Real culture will sustain when the chips are down. Ping Pong, Pool tables and beer Fridays do not make culture. People and a belief in leadership makes culture. Hire people passionate about your product, service or industry and they will be thinking about work 24/7. Passion doesnât quit at 5:00 PM. Career Lessons: I need to speak up. There are no mind readers. I am helping the department and the company becomes stronger when I volunteer my ideas. I am doing the company a disservice when I keep my ideas to myself. If the ideas are being rejected, it might not be the idea; it is probably the communication style. It is your career. Your career is not your companyâs career or your managerâs career. Only you can put the time, effort and most importantly INITIATIVE into your career. Do not come to your manager with a problem. Do not come to your manager with a problem and 3 solutions and ask them to choose one. Come to them with a few solutions and a single recommendation. Be a problem solver. I am the CEO of the department I work in, and I should push for what I believe in a positive way. âThis idea is stupidâ is not positive. I am an individual contributor within the company, and when I push back or disagree, I need to do that in a diplomatic and productive way. Everyone in the company has a customer. Everyone. The richest person in the world (Bill Gates) and the most powerful man (POTUS) in the world has customers. We as employeeshave customers, and they write our checks. Too many employees expect the company to treat them like the customer. As an employee, I am the one that delivers the service and sends out the invoice (time card). The Company is my customer and the Company pays my invoice (paycheck). Care about your customer or you wonât have one. Resigning or quitting a job ugly may make you feel better, but only reinforces to the company that they should have let you go earlier. Give good Face on the way out the door. Donât let good years of hard work be wiped away in a single afternoon. Everyone wants to work with someone who knows how to smile. When I talk with Sr. leaders, I need to keep it short, high level and strategic. Sr. leaders do not worry about the minutia. Companies donât pay Sr. leaders to deal with the day-to-day details. They are paid to think âstrategicâ, delegate âtactical day-to-dayâ. This is a very tough communication transition for many and ultimately what keeps people held back. Individual contributors are from Venus, and Execs are from Mars. If you donât know what your manager does, find out. If you donât know what makes them successful, you donât know how to help them become successful. If your manager is not successful, you will not be successful. Get to know your manager at a personal level. You donât have to be their BFF, but if you donât take an interest in your manager, how can you expect them to take an interest in you? HRNasty works full-time as an HR professional and has a side business writing fortunes for Chinese cookies. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that canât help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. âHe has a nasty forkball. Does Einsteins brain (and his mind) have anything to teach us
Does Einstein's cerebrum (and his brain) have anything to educate us Does Einstein's cerebrum (and his brain) have anything to educate us Subsequent to breaking down lost photos of Einstein's unblemished cerebrum from his 1955 post-mortem it became undeniable that each flap of his mind varied from the human standard. Tipping the scales at 1,230 grams the cerebrum was not greater however the cortical design was remarkable. More significant than his dim issue, Einstein's psyche showed us the inward activities of the Very Small (quanta) and the Very Big (space-time arch of the Universe). The excursion of that mind all through Einstein's 76 years may demonstrate educational today.Einstein's psyche never stopped to be a work in progress which conquered various difficulties on its approach to logical immortality. To mind: The genuine Baby Einstein didn't start to talk until well after his subsequent birthday. He didn't breeze through his school selection test for what is presently called Zurich Polytechnic and needed to sit tight a year for confirmation. He was known as a languid pooch by his math educator, Hermann Minkowski. In 1900, he graduated fourth out of five understudies in the program to prepare educators in math and material science. The next year he got his better half pregnant and right up 'til the present time the destiny of their little girl, Lieserl, is unknown. He was declined an assistantship at more than one college and didn't get customary work until 1902 when he turned into a patent agent â" second rate class in Bern. He stayed at the Swiss Patent Office until 1909 in spite of the fact that in his extra time he was composing (without access to a college library) the six splendid papers that soar him during his annus mirabilis (Miracle Year) of 1905.His Nobel (1921 yet given in 1922) was granted not for his Theory of General Relativity (apparently one of the preeminent accomplishments of the Mind of Man) however for his work on the photoelectric impact which was a trailblazer of quantum mechanics. Amusingly, Einstein vociferously dismissed quantum mechanics accepting that God doesn't play dice. So, we see that Einstein experienced in excess of a couple of obstructions however he assuredly advanced toward Scientific Valhalla. Would we be able to trust that his Mind and Brain will show us how he defeated the slings and bolts of unbelievable fortune over six decades after his demise? A couple of potential exercises: Grow a fourth mid-frontal projection gyrus. Most human cerebrums have 3 such gyri (edges) and Einstein had 4 (see Lepore, F., Finding Einstein's Brain, Rutgers U. Press 2018). In spite of the fact that we as a whole can develop around 1,400 new hippocampal neurons day by day, an entire gyrus (and its wiring) isn't a choice). Endeavor your family's qualities. Einstein's dad and uncle were both scientifically slanted and breathed life into Maxwell's conditions of electromagnetism with electric utility new businesses in Munich and Milan. Einstein didn't turn into the designer his dad needed yet the characteristic sciences were his family's casual conversation. Apply what you realize at your specific employment. Being a patent agent is altogether different from being a hypothetical physicist. Einstein needed to pass judgment on the benefits of licenses for synchronizing railroad timekeepers all through Europe's developing rail line frameworks. This workaday undertaking drove him to contemplate Time and set up for his Theory of Special Relativity which dispersed Isaac Newton's fantasy of supreme all inclusive time. Pick the correct issue. Estimating the move (precession) of Mercury's circle at 43 bend seconds out of every century didn't fit with Newton's Law of Gravitation. That was the ideal opportunity for another vision of gravity not as a power yet as a field, and the issue of Mercury's circle was unraveled by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Figure out how to utilize new devices. Indeed, even with a Supernatural occurrence Year added to his repertoire in 1905. Einstein didn't realize enough math to pull off his Theory of General Relativity! With a little assistance from his companions, for the most part Marcel Grossman, he took in the arcane science of non-Euclidean geometry and tensor math, and the aftereffect was when General Relativity's right on target forecast of the bowing of starlight made the World agog in 1919. Not every person profits by a coach. In any event Einstein didn't. He stayed away from teaching to the got insight of the current logical ideal models by not going to graduate school, composing his doctoral postulation while completely utilized as a patent assistant outside academe, and not apprenticing himself to senior personnel for a post-doc year. Einstein was allowed to seek after his own significant contemplations and he thought fresh essentially on the grounds that he was never allowed to go inside the case. Grasp your subjective style. By his own confirmation, Einstein's depended on visual and solid symbolism in his idea (Gedanken) tests. When he had envisioned the equality of gravity and speeding up experienced by the inhabitant of a quickening take care of pulled by a rope in interstellar space, he could then continue with scientific formalisms and compose the conditions. Individuals think in words, pictures, conceptual images, or, as archly articulated by Maynard Keynes â" considerations. Choose what is best for you. Remain inquisitive. At the point when Einstein was given a compass at age 4 or 5 he felt that something profoundly covered up must be behind things to represent the compass' needle unerringly highlighting attractive North. His interest never faltered and in the totality of time introduced his fundamentally unique perspective on the universe. The capacity to step back and ask why? or how? can fuel the feeling of miracle that changes the every day schedule into a way of revelation. Endure. On the day he passed on, close to his clinic bed were 12 pages of conditions that Einstein had written in a further endeavor to accommodate quantum hypothesis with gravity â" a brought together field hypothesis. Einstein battled all through the most recent many years of his life yet neglected to locate this Holy Grail of material science. We're despite everything looking and the most recent cycle of this Theory of Everything is String Theory with 11 measurements (10 spatial and 1 fleeting)! Was there a point to Einstein's last bound battle to wrest a Ultimate Truth past Robert Louis Stevenson's support that to travel ideally is a superior thing than to show up? You wager there was ⦠that equivalent hounded assurance delivered the coruscating brightness of the Theory of General Relativity following 10 years of fruitless endeavors from 1905 to 1915. On the off chance that you receive these 9 exercises (some whimsical) from the life of a visionary twentieth century hypothetical physicist, your own prosperity isn't guaranteed (and Einstein would be the first to let you know so). He was unquestionably a virtuoso and perhaps the chief virtuoso of our occasions yet on a human scale, his capacity to stand up to his own and expert issues will work well for as a North Star 63 years after his death.Frederick E. Lepore MD is a teacher of Neurology and Ophthalmology at Rutgers/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. He is a clinical neuro-ophthalmologist, the writer of a history of a cerebrum - Finding Einstein's Brain and more than 125 logical articles, and architect of the Optic Nerve Test Card. Dr. Lepore is likewise the dad of Ladders Deputy Editor, Meredith Lepore.

Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon
Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon Lee Iacocca Engineering Icon While Lee Iacocca might be perceived for his adroit marketing prudence as ostensibly the most popular U.S. car official since Henry Ford, it was his designing preparing that gave him a gratefulness for the significance of item quality. I realize that his experience as a designer paid off liberally for Ford Motor Company and for Chrysler, says Keith Crain, editorial manager in-head of car industry paper Automotive News, who has followed Iacocca since the 1970s and thinks of him as a companion. Despite the fact that he has been known as an item fellow and a promoting fellow his entire life, that fundamental (designing) preparing gave him a great feeling of item. An original American conceived in 1924 to common laborers guardians in the steel-production area of Pennsylvania, Iacocca had a heavenly vocation, driving both of those monster vehicle creators. Preparing at Ford In the wake of graduating with a B.S. in mechanical building from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, Iacocca was granted an esteemed Wallace Memorial Fellowship from Princeton University, where he earned a M.S. in mechanical designing, and in 1946 was recruited as a designer by Ford. Quickly, he understood that he didnt need to make vehicles, he needed to sell them, particularly in the wake of taking a shot at a mechanical building drawing of a grasp spring in an instructional class at Fords huge River Rouge plant close to Detroit. Inside several years, his managers concurred, and he was moved to a Ford locale deals office in eastern Pennsylvania. By 1956, he was filling in as supervisor of Fords Philadelphia deals locale when he thought of an innovative advancement that included a simpler installment plan for clients. The thought was something like $56 every month in 1956 for your new Ford, says Crain. He adjusted the installment sum with the year, and he sold the hellfire out of Fords in that zone, Crain includes. The locale deals went from most noticeably awful to best in a quarter of a year. That got the consideration of Ford the executives, and he was moved to base camp in Dearborn, MI, eventually discovering his actual bringing in item advancement. The original 1965 Ford Mustang. Picture: Wikimedia Commons He rose rapidly, turning into the most youthful man to head the Ford division, was named VP of the vehicle and truck bunch in 1965, official VP of Ford North American car tasks in 1967, and leader of Ford Motor Co. in 1970. Known as the Father of the Mustang, Iacocca initiated the structure task of this lively, modestly valued vehicle that turned into a moment hit in 1964 and set deals precedents. Mechanical Knowledge Crain additionally acknowledges Iacocca for thinking of what was referred to inside at Ford as a focuses vehicle. This was a drivable model dependent on mechanical building drawings that had all the significant focuses with the goal that both the inside and outside could be assessed, Crain says. Presently its genuinely normal, yet it wasnt during the 70s, and I think a ton had to do with Iacoccas mechanical information, he includes. 10 Changes Affecting Employee Wellbeing and How to Lessen the Impact
10 Changes Affecting Employee Wellbeing and How to Lessen the Impact Emotional well-being can be affected by both âgoodâ and âbadâ changes in our lives. Here are 10 business changes that can add to the stress levels of your employees. In business, itâs important to recognize the extent to which changes may affect employee mental health, especially given we donât always know what personal trials we are adding to in peopleâs lives. When it comes to mental health, itâs impossible to separate the personal from professional. Here, weâve ranked changes according to psychiatrists Holmes and Raheâs Social Readjustment Scale, used extensively in studies since its development in 1967. It attributes âLife Change Unitsâ to events within a 12-month period. The higher the score, the more likely the individual is to encounter mental health conditions. For reference, the death of a spouse is rated 100 on the scale. Dismissal or redundancy (47 Life Change Units) Itâs no surprise dismissal clocks in at the top of workplace changes that can impact the mental health of employees. If dismissal or redundancy is necessary, itâs important to support the employee as much as possible as they leave the business. Dismissal and redundancy can also have a wider impact on teams and individual employees who can begin to question the safety of their own position or fear an increased workload. Make sure to confront this issue head-on and explain the next steps in terms of hiring replacements or restructuring teams and roles to help reduce anxieties. Retirement (45 Life Change Units) Retirement, while often treated as something to celebrate, can be a difficult life change for many people, whether itâs a personal choice or not. Businesses can offer flexibility when it comes to retirement by allowing employees to slowly reduce their hours ahead of the big day to make the process easier for both the retiree and their colleagues. Business readjustment (39 Life Change Units) Itâs important to note that while business restructures donât need to directly affect an employeeâs position in the business to have an impact. Change is one of the six key areas which the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) highlight as being influential when looking at the risk of workplace stress. Itâs critical to communicate changes well and remain transparent to safeguard employee wellbeing. If your business is undergoing a prolonged period of change, an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) can support staff members by offering free access to confidential counseling. The data collected from EAP use can help identify who in your workforce is most at risk of being negatively impacted emotionally and in need of additional support during this time. Change in financial state (38 Life Change Units) Thereâs no distinction in this change between positive or negative financial states. Adjustments to remuneration, be they raises or cutbacks, can both have an impact. Change in frequency of arguments (35 Life Change Units) Itâs important that employees tasked with defending change, championing projects or managing people are supported when theyâre fighting on multiple fronts. Of course, âargumentsâ should ideally be discussions, but itâs important line managers are aware of just how embattled their reports may be. Change in work responsibilities (29 Life Change Units) Again, some employees will relish the idea of more, or even less, responsibility while others will not. In any case, itâs important to note that even those that welcome more responsibility on the surface may harbor deeper concerns about them that need to be worked through. Setting up regular informal catch-ups with a line manager can encourage disclosure if an employee feels they have too much or little responsibility and positive actions can be agreed between both parties and put into place. Outstanding personal achievement (28 Life Change Units) This one appears to be nothing but positive, but the pressure of achieving even a personally very meaningful goal will still add to the total level of demand that we may face and can add to stress levels and add performance pressure. Managers should support employees through the promotion process as they adapt to their new role and extra responsibilities. Consider setting up a mentoring programme where senior managers share their experiences and outcomes with junior managers to help them progress quickly and hit the ground running. Trouble with the boss (23 Life Change Units) Relationship and communication breakdown between line managers and their reports is one of the more obvious candidates for this list and itâs important to make it clear to employees who they can approach when issues arise. Indeed, conflict with managers or at work is a leading reason for people to seek help with their mental health according to a 2015 report by the OECD. Employers often do not identify behavior change and conflicts as warning signs. So, having the right awareness among managers and effective means of providing support are key to limiting distress among your workforce. Change in working hours or conditions (20 Life Change Units) Changes of this nature come relatively far down the list, however, they can be volatile for some employees. The score attributed here certainly needs to consider the scale of the change and what other impacts it has. For example, a cut in hours will also impact the employeeâs financial state. Consider offering staff flexible working, where they can choose the hours they work based on when they feel able to perform at their best. This can help employees find a better work-life balance and support better emotional resilience. Holidays (13 Life Change Units) When someone is stressed, a usual office refrain might be: âyou need some time off, take a holidayâ. But holidays can come with the heightened workload on either side of the break, financial stress, and challenging organization. Many employees talk about âinbox fearâ â" the number of outstanding emails and pending work requests- waiting for them on return from leave. To help reduce this culture, have an explicit agreement, colleagues wonât email an absent colleague unless absolutely necessary when they are on annual leave. Implementing a formal handover policy for those going away can mean the employee taking a break can relax safe in the knowledge colleagues know the priority tasks and can move things forward. The rest of the team will also feel up-to-date with all outstanding projects and prepared on how best to allocate resources. Business Consultant Career Profile - VocationVillage
Business Consultant Career Profile - VocationVillage VocationVillage.com interviewed Susan Melchert about her work as a Business Consultant. Here is what she had to say.How would you describe the main functions of your work?Business Consultant Susan MelchertI train business owners how to maximize their resources with technology. For example, how to master computer software like Microsoft Office or SharePoint (an internal Web site where people from the same organization can share files). What does a typical day look like as a Business Consultant? The typical day changes a lot. It is easier to describe a typical week: one day for internal training to stay up-to-date, one day doing bookkeeping and invoicing and accepting payments, two to three days on the road visiting clients as needs arise. Sometimes into the evening as emergencies arise. Sometimes out the door in ten minutes when someones server has gone down. I am always ready to go. Ill take a motorcycle in rush hour traffic. I do most of my training 1-1 but sometimes in small group tr aining. What do you like best about being a Business Consultant?I enjoy empowering female professionals by teaching them how to use business and technology. I like to help people to feel more comfortable with technology. I also enjoy being appreciated for my listening skills and I love the teaching part of my job. Also, this job is fairly recession-proof. When budgets are lean, people will spend money to learn how to use the software they have rather than spend money on new software.I also enjoy that people will give me their old computers when they upgrade or I will buy computer equipment from companies going out of business. I clean the computers and fix them up and sell them to worthwhile organizations for a reasonable price. This is not a big moneymaker, but a form of public service for me.What are the most challenging things about your work?Recruiting is hard, meaning it is difficult to find someone who can help me to deliver to the customer in a way that meets both my expectati ons and that of the customer. It is sometimes tough to find someone who can talk the language of business to the customer and also understand the technology. How did you choose this particular type of work?Back in the 1990s while in graduate school to get an MBA, I held a job as a Library Research Assistant and I learned how to use the library database system. I also had a job in a school computer lab and helped instructors put together Web pages. These jobs evolved into my current business. What was your professional background before you became a Business Consultant? Before I went back to school to get an MBA, I was selling photographic equipment. I wanted to help photographers with their businesses so thats why I enrolled in business school. While in school, other students and faculty were asking me for technical assistance and therefore I discovered the technology niche by observing the strong demand for it. Typically men are more protective of their knowledge and are condescending ; however I was willing to share and now focus on helping other women. What is your educational background?MBA from Washington State University and Associates in Software Programming from Cascadia Community College. What skills are most important to succeed as a Business Consultant?Active listening and delivering what the customer expects, technical aptitude, willingness to invest time to stay current, ability to master new material, and willingness to ask questions of others. What advice do you have for someone who wants to be a Business Consultant?Admit when you do not know the answers to client questions and provide references as to where they can find the answers or offer to do the research yourself.Remind your customer that we are all on the same path, only some have started before others and now it is our turn to help those starting after us.If an experienced professional decided he/she wanted to make a career change to become a Business Consultant, what are the steps he/she shou ld take to make a successful transition?Surprisingly enough, there is a lot of information online; the trick is to find it, compile it into the functional areas of business and then read through it to the point you can explain it. For example, Microsoft offers a lot of free online training that you can complete. Find someone who already does this type of work and ask their advice. Offer to help them with whatever they might need in exchange for advice and mentoring. This way you could learn by observing and doing. Ask yourself what keeps you up at night and what makes you jump out of bed excited to start the day. What do you find yourself doing in your spare time, where time flies because you are so involved in what you are doing? Now find the need for that gift you possess. Are there any commonly held misperceptions about your work that you would like to clarify?People underestimate the amount of time it takes to prepare for a client it takes more time than people realize. You may have a lot of prep time if you are learning something new. It may take three hours to prepare for a one hour meeting. Also, the wardrobe and presentation of oneâs self are all part of the package. Many people in high tech wear jeans and a T-shirt. I wear business casual unless it is a weekend job where I will be crawling around dealing with the technology. What is the income range for Business Consultants? As much as one can manage. Typically when working for someone else, the hourly rate may vary between $30-$50. If you are an independent consultant, the hourly rate is $150, which takes into account all the prep time for that ONE hour. What are your long-term career goals?Doing more business coaching on functional elements like improving customer service processes, learning better time management, and utilizing the calendar in Microsoft Outlook for short and long-term planning. Also technical training, e.g. the most recent version of Microsoft Office and SharePoint.Any other comment s?I love what I do because I get to be a hero and make someoneâs life easier. My clients really appreciate my demeanor because I am patient and I encourage questions. I enjoy the public aspect as well as the process of preparing materials for handouts. This is my way of leaving others more empowered and building their self-esteem with business operations.Thank you, Susan! .
